In this month’s issue:

In his highly informative column ‘Lessons From A Professional’, Jonathan Blackledge takes a look at the strike rate and profitability of favourites at Royal Ascot and explains why he thinks that the favourites won an astonishing 40% of the meeting’s races, producing a very healthy return on investment of 130.4%.

These days there is such a wealth of information available to punters on the web and in print that it is a full time job just keeping up to date with developments. This often means that one can overlook key pieces of information. To help us along Ricky Taylor examines one such factor that can often be overlooked -  the physical appearance of a horse in the paddock prior to racing, and conducts some in-depth analysis into the subject, particularly on two-year-old debutants.

To help us mark our cards for the coming month David Renham looks in detail at
2 year-old Maidens run in July. With his usual thoroughness and taking data over five years he uncovers a wealth of useful information and points us in the right direction for finding winners in these tricky affairs.

The Highlander is in nostalgic mood (as ever!) and reflects on his nine years of systems writing and re-visits that ever green chestnut – the art of finding horses that will shorten in price as the day wears on. Nowadays, with the use of computers it’s a lot easier (or is it?) to find those steamers and, with the advent of betting exchanges trading opportunities abound if you can reliably predict them. He also brings us a nice Racing Post system for finding solid winning favourites.

In another great chapter from his fantastic book ‘DIY Punting’, Terry Burke offers some invaluable advice concerning form study. He strongly urges us to make our judgements based on the factors of the highest relevance to the race concerned and helps us understand just what it is we should be concentrating on.

Backing quick return horses on the flat is by no means a new idea but it still works and can be used very successfully in finding good chance second favourites at decent prices. Bernard Hibbert shows us how to achieve decent profits and an excellent return on investment of around 40%. Definitely one for the portfolio.

This month we welcome a new contributor – Russell Gibbs. Russell is a professional backer of horses and has been involved in racing for over thirty years. He’ll be keeping a diary of his experiences as a professional punter (both the ups and the downs!) and you can read all about him on Page 23.

Mervyn Coulson continues his in-depth course analysis, turning his attention this month to Chepstow, while Paul Fowlie and David Peat mark our cards with their horses-to follow.

Mark Leyton resumes his attempt to win his fourth month in the RIC tipster competition. If you’d like to take part in the tipster competition with a chance to win £1000 you’ll find all the details on Page 46.

The RIC tipping lines had a nice profit of 7.45 points in June. That makes a total of 29.77 points profit for the year so far.
